West Anglia Great Northern, commonly shortened to ''WAGN'', was a train operating company in England. It operated the West Anglia Great Northern franchise between January 1997 and March 2004, as well as the Great Northern franchise between April 2004 and March 2006. It was initially owned by Prism Rail, and was subsequently acquired by the British transport conglomerate National Express. The West Anglia Great Northern franchise was created as part of the privatisation of British Rail, the recently founded company Prism Rail successfully bid for it, being awarded a seven year concession for its operation during December 1996. The Paris and Great Northern Railroad (“P&GN”), a wholly-owned subsidiary of the St. Louis–San Francisco Railway (“SLSF”), was incorporated July 28, 1881 for the purpose of building a railroad from Paris, Texas to a connection with the SLSF at the Red River. Work commenced in February 1886, and the line—which included a bridge over the Red River—was placed in operation in January 1888. The mainline stretched 16.210 miles, the railroad also having 8.337 miles of yard tracks and sidings, for 24.547 miles total. The line was operated directly by the SLSF until September 1, 1902, after which the P&GN operated it, except during World War I when it was operated by the United States Railroad Administration. The New Orleans, Jackson and Great Northern was a gauge railway originally commissioned by the State of Illinois, with both Stephen Douglas and Abraham Lincoln being among its supporters in the 1851 Illinois Legislature. It connected Canton, Mississippi with New Orleans, and was completed just before the American Civil War, in which it served strategic interests, especially for the Confederacy. The Waco, Beaumont, Trinity and Sabine Railway (WBT&S) was a standard gauge U.S. shortline railroad located in East Texas. The company was formed from two earlier shortlines that interchanged in Trinity, Texas, and had come under the control of the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway, but were spun off in 1923 as part of that company's bankruptcy reorganization. The WBT&S itself declared bankruptcy in 1930 and would operate under receivership for the rest of its existence—the longest bankruptcy in Texas rail history. The Great Northern route, formerly known as Great Northern Electrics, is the route consisting of services on the southern end of the East Coast Main Line, which is the main railway link between the cities of London and Edinburgh, and its associated branches, including the Cambridge line, Fen line, Hertford loop line, and Northern City Line.
